Q&A: My Client Wants Fireworks at Their Wedding. What do I do?
As a wedding planner you probably get a lot a strange, different, or interesting requests from your couples. But what happens when they request something that is illegal? I have seen this several times, and with the summer comes the request for Fireworks. Yes, fireworks are to summer as rain is to Seattle. People look forward to the big firework displays around the area. Being from Georgia where you can buy fireworks literally anywhere and everywhere I have ceased caring about seeing a big firework display. I mean we would just shoot them off in our backyard whenever we wanted to see fireworks. However, here, in the Seattle area. Fireworks…

Changing Your Name After Marriage. FAQ.
Do I have to change my name after marriage? Even though we are 2019 I still get this question constantly. For some reason people, especially women, are under the impression that they MUST change their name after marriage. Yes, this has been the custom for a really long time but it is not legally required. Is there a time limit in which to change my name? There is no time limit. Some wait years before they actually get around to changing their name. What you do want to do is be sure that if you start using your new name you will want to make sure that you get the…

What is Wedding Insurance and Should You Get It?
I think it is safe to say that the Royal Wedding kicked offed wedding season this year. So as you plan your own “royal wedding” you may be asking yourself, “what is wedding insurance? And should I get it?” Wedding Insurance, more commonly known as event insurance, generally covers you in 2 ways; either with cancellations or liability. Having witnessed couples devastated after caterers, florist, or DJs fail to show and seeing liability disasters on YouTube videos; being covered for either or both is not necessarily a bad thing. Cancellation coverage typically covers you in cases of extreme weather where you have to cancel your wedding. You can be reimbursed…

Are Memes Ruining Marriage?
Of course this title isn’t too serious, I mean a meme is not going to be responsible for your marriage failing but they can plant idiotic ideas in your head. I see mems like the following on my timeline on Facebook all the time. They bug me. Why you ask? Because they make marriage sound superficial and spouses sound disposable. Then if you read into the comments of these mems you see people celebrating each other for saying “yes” and sounding like a saint for saying they will not leave their disabled spouse. If you read my previous post you will see that I despise people who are…

Why We Shouldn’t Celebrate the Fact that Kim is by Kanye’s Side
Everywhere I turn someone is talking about how great Kim is being for being by Kanye’s side. It’s in articles, social media, even DJs are commenting on it. I’m confused. Isn’t that what a spouse is supposed to do? I mean I know when live in a time when people write their own vows but traditionally they used to say “in sickness and in health.” It’s always surprising when I hear people boasting about the “nice” things their SOs have done for them. And I do understand there is such as a thing as being grateful and appreciative and making sure your spouse is celebrated. But shouldn’t most of these…

Are you legally required to change your last name once you get remarried?
I recently had a childhood friend text me asking if she could ask me a legal question. That’s a common request as a lawyer, all your friends need legal advice. So I told her “sure, but I may not know the answer.” Her question was whether her fiancé’s ex-wife had to legally change her last name since she was now remarried. That I did know the answer to. Women have traditionally changed their last names when they get married. It’s just the way it is. There are plenty of reasons why they do and why they don’t. I won’t go into them. But I will say it is not a…

Potluck Weddings: New Trend or Potential Liability
I attended my first potluck wedding last summer. I had never heard of a potluck wedding before that, but I love to cook (and I’m a good cook) so I was excited to show off my culinary skills. I thought this was something my friends invented until I started to see more potluck weddings popping up and I realized this is a new trend. Potlucks are not new however, they have been going on since the beginning of time. People get together for book clubs or Sunday dinners and everyone brings their favorite dish to create a full meal. I remember one of my favorite books as a child was…
